Northern Vietnam

Ninh Binh

Often called 'Ha Long Bay on land,' Ninh Binh is limestone karsts, winding rivers and bright green rice paddies.

In Ninh Binh, towering limestone karsts rise straight out of still water, framing scenery that is both dramatic and quietly beautiful. Drift through its caves on a small sampan and you'll understand why this is often called a miniature Ha Long Bay set inland — a beauty that only really shows itself once you're there.

Highlights

  • Trang An — a UNESCO World Heritage site of caves running through the mountains
  • Tam Coc — the Ngo Dong River winding between two limestone walls
  • Mua Cave — 500 stone steps up to a sweeping viewpoint
  • Hoa Lu — the first capital of feudal Vietnam
  • Cuc Phuong National Park, Vietnam's oldest primeval forest
  • Phat Diem Stone Church, a uniquely designed cathedral
